121. Subsidiarity and the State - Quadragesimo Anno - Faith and Labor Ep.2
Friday Mar 05, 2021
Friday Mar 05, 2021
Faith and Labor is a podcast video series exploring the history of Catholic Social Teachings and how it can be used to bridge divisions and guide humanity to solve the great challenges facing the working class.
Hosted by John Andrechak of Laborlines and Evan Matthew Papp of Empathy Media Lab, they discuss history, scripture, encyclicals, current events, and how faith and love is needed to strengthen solidarity and heal a world in disarray.
Episode 2 focuses on Quadragesimo Anno, which means "In the 40th Year" and is an encyclical issued by Pope Pius XI in 1931, 40 years after Leo XIII's encyclical Rerum novarum, further developing Catholic social teaching. Rerurm Novarum was also the focus of Episode 1 of Faith and Labor.
We also discuss the Catholic Concept of Subsidiarity. And we discuss current headlines related to the Poor People’s Campaign and the Catholic Season of Lent.
We would love to hear your feedback, ideas, and suggested guests for future shows, as we seek to promote what Pope Francis described in Fratelli Tutti as a more just and fraternal world where “Love shatters the chains that keep us isolated and separate; in their place, it builds bridges.”

Union Made captures the blood, sweat, tears, courage, love, and solidarity that animates a union organizing drive. This book provides a window into the challenges faced by workers who are fighting for dignity and a more humane workplace.
Buy this book to better understand why every working person has a right to form a union without harassment from the boss.
Union Made was written by Eric Lotke who is an author, lawyer, criminal justice and union activist.
Overview of Union Made
Catherine Campbell is a union organizer. Nate is an accountant working for a company that's planning a hostile takeover of Pac-Shoppe, the company Catherine is organizing.
It's a love story.
Union Made is a fast-paced romance with a strong female lead and a gripping labor campaign that explores union organizing from the inside. It reveals the tactics, strains and risks of mobilizing a diverse group of workers to stand together against a giant corporation.
As Catherine’s campaign falters in the face of Pac-Shoppe’s illegal hardball tactics, Nate’s sympathy for the workers and fascination with Catherine grow. Can the lonely accountant interest her by sharing evidence of Pac-Shoppe’s dirty tricks? How much trouble will he be in if he reveals corporate secrets to the union?
Release date March 15, 2021.
Union Made is published by Hard Ball Press
Tim Sheard is the Executive Editor of Hard Ball Press.
Veteran nurse Timothy Sheard is a writer, publisher, mentor to writers and union organizer with the National Writers Union, UAW Local 1981. After writing 7 mystery novels featuring hospital custodian-shop steward Lenny Moss, he launched Hard Ball Press to help working class people write and publish their stories. Timothy believes that when workers write and tell their stories, they build rank and file solidarity and union power, as well strengthening the fight for social justice solidarity. Their stories help to combat the anti-labor and anti-working class assaults by the One Percent. Hard Ball Press is the premier publisher of working class life.

The debut EP of DC-based PsyOp brings you into the fractured mind of one Daniel K, a twisted prophet of rage who speaks of shifting dreamscapes and the unnameable terrors of the night.
Howl from the Void fuses nihilist anthems of decadence and decay ('Bang My Head Against the Wall,' 'The World Owes Me Something'), hardcore bruisers ('Before the Gates'), and jagged postpunk ('Copy and Paste') to create a breathless display of alienation, paranoia, and outrage towards the dystopian techno-horror that is our world today.
Henry and John of grind powerhouse No Mas, along with co-writer Seth Abelson and producer Dag'Nabbit, conjure a vivid backdrop to K's scouring vocals and piercing lyrics. PsyOp draws from the righteous fury of classic hardcore and the nihilism of 70's punk to create something fiercely its own.

Lyrics - Bang My Head Against the Wall
Got the vision but can't shake the coil
Film the revolt but air the rerun
Cauterize the burn but leave the tumor
Growing and growing and growing
Bang my head against the wall
It's all I can do
Bang my head against the wall
It's all I can do
It's all I can do
The rush of blood is like a shot in the arm
A catalyst for excision of pain
After a while it all goes numb and you're
Bleeding and bleeding and bleeding
(Chorus)
Piece together the shattered mirror
The shards of glass won't fit together
So realize with a sinking feeling
You'll never see your reflection
Again

Lyrics - The World Owes Me Something
All our yesterdays like ashes
All our dreams in water washes
Away into the winding stream
Weaving winding byzantine
Straight to the sea of desire
Where dreams plot and where they conspire
Kill the living steal their flesh
To the land of nod and of death
The world owes me something x 4
But I don't know what it is x2
One day one day we all will die
We had a fountain but they stripped it dry
And I feel a ripple in time itself
Stop the travesty of souls to sell
Debt collectors armed to the teeth
Serve the papers and they kill the thief
Anthill skyline blocks the sun
Like a growing carcinogen
(Chorus)
They won't rest until everything is commodified
Cheapened deadened surveilled and privatized
Prisoners of automated paralysis
Humanity consumed by the sheer force of our artifice
There's nowhere to hide in the desert of the real
We must tear down the walls of the city on the hill
The system zeroes in with it's omniscient eye
A hunter honing in on it's kill
At least the hippies had a reprieve from the churning gears
At least they could (indistinct) greed and fear
Now we are pawns of the atrociously wealthy
Our only reprieve xanax blackouts and fentanyl ODs

About the Labor Radio Podcast Network
The Labor Radio Podcast Network is both a one-stop shop for audiences looking for labor content and a resource for labor broadcasters and podcasters. Resources include a weekly podcast summarizing shows produced by network members, marketing on social media, a website listing network shows and how audiences can find them, a database for contacting expert guests, access to a private listserv for Network members, and a weekly video call to increase solidarity and support amongst members.
Launched in April 2020, the Labor Radio Podcast Network focuses on working class issues that are often overlooked in the corporate-controlled media. The goal of the network is to help raise the voices of working people and strengthen organized labor to demand and achieve better treatment from workplaces and elected officials.

Elise and Chris discuss films from the DC Labor Filmfest Spring Screening Series with Andrea Arenas, Communications & Policy Coordinator for the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement, and co-host of the El Desvio podcast (She’ll be doing the Q&A for IDENTIFYING FEATURES [SIN SEÑAS PARTICULARES] on Wednesday, March 31). We’re also joined by labor journalist Sarah Jaffe, author of Work Won't Love You Back: How Devotion to Our Jobs Keeps Us Exploited, Exhausted and Alone. Sarah also cohosts the terrific Belabored podcast (she’s doing the Q&A for LAPSIS Wed, April 7; 7:00 p.m. ET).
We talk about our first movies, about the things we’re missing from being stuck watching movies at home during the pandemic, and we even have some tips on how to watch scary movies. Grab your popcorn, sit back and relax, and enjoy the show!
Includes clips from Chaplin’s Modern Times, King Kong (1933), and trailers for Identifying Features and Lapsis. The DC Labor Filmfest Spring Screening Series is co-presented by the AFI Silver Theatre and the DC Labor FilmFest.
Produced by Chris Garlock. Video edited by Evan Papp of Empathy Media Lab.
