The University of Maryland School of Public Policy Alumni Board's video and podcast series called Policy Dialogues discusses current events through a policy lens.
Episode 13 talks with Lee Blinder who is the Executive Director of Trans Maryland, which is an organization that aims to promote trans wellness throughout Maryland by increasing access to affirming services and resources, while nurturing young trans leadership.
Lee discusses HB 427 Change Waiver of Publication Bill - Maryland House Committee Hearing. What Does This Bill Do? Under current law, when filing for a legal name change in Maryland, an individual is required to pay to publish a notice of name change in their local newspaper. A petition can be filed to waive the publication requirement, and could be granted by a judge. Publication adds weeks, sometimes months, to the process and can cost up to an additional $250. Publication is also a violation of a person's privacy. The publication can linger on the Internet indefinitely and have adverse results. Some have resulted in workplace discrimination and even violence, in the cases of trans people and survivors of stalking or domestic violence. The process of petitioning to waive the the publication requirement still is not granted in most areas of the state. A judge may deny any petition and require publication.
HB 427, however, would require courts to waive the publication requirement, thereby protecting the privacy of those changing their names. As a result, this will make the name change process quicker and more affordable. This will reduce one of the barriers transgender people and others face while trying to live their most authentic life.
University of Maryland School of Public Policy Alumni Hosts included Seanniece Bamiro (UMD SPP ‘15), Delisha Thompson (UMD SPP ‘18), and Evan Papp (UMD SPP ‘11).

103. 9to5:The Story of a Movement - Post-film Q&A
Wednesday Feb 10, 2021
Wednesday Feb 10, 2021
Post-film Q&A with 9to5 co-founder Debbie Schneider and Angel Darcourt, Associate National Field Director for Working America. Moderated by Elise Bryant, President of the Coalition of Labor Union Women.
9to5: The Story of a Movement captures the real-life fight that inspired a hit and changed the American workplace.
When Dolly Parton sang “9 to 5,” she was doing more than just shining a light on the fate of American working women. Parton was singing the true story of a movement that started with 9to5, a group of Boston secretaries in the early 1970s. Their goals were simple—better pay, more advancement opportunities, and an end to sexual harassment—but their unconventional approach attracted the press and shamed their bosses into change. Featuring interviews with 9to5’s founders, as well as actor and activist Jane Fonda, 9to5: The Story of a Movement is the previously untold story of the fight that inspired a hit and changed the American workplace.
Presented by the DC Labor FilmFest; Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW); Labor Heritage Foundation, Rochester Labor Film Series.
The DC Labor FilmFest is sponsored by American Income Life.
Produced by Evan Matthew Papp of Empathy Media Lab.

106. Pass the PRO Act and Support Your Rights At Work w/ UCOMM Live
Monday Feb 15, 2021
Monday Feb 15, 2021
On Thursday, February 11th, 2020, I called into UCOMM Live to support the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act that was recently re-introduce in the 117th Congress.
While the economy is working very well for the wealthy, the well-connected, and massive corporations—it’s stagnating for everyone else. From 1980 to 2014, wages for the bottom half of income earners grew by one percent, while wages for the top one percent of earners grew by 205 percent.
This inequality, stagnation, and instability for so many is not a natural product of a functioning economy, it is the result of policy choices that have stripped workers of the power to stand together and bargain for fairer wages, benefits, and working conditions.
The Protecting the Right to Organize Act is a historic proposal that restores fairness to the economy by strengthening the federal laws that protect workers’ right to organize a union and bargain for higher wages and better benefits.

Her work has appeared in The New York Times, The Nation, the Guardian, the Washington Post, The New Republic, the Atlantic, and many other publications. She is the co-host, with Michelle Chen, of Dissent magazine’s Belabored podcast, as well as a columnist at The Progressive and New Labor Forum.

110. Rights and Duties of Capital - Rerum Novarum - Faith and Labor (Episode 1 Pilot)
Wednesday Feb 17, 2021
Wednesday Feb 17, 2021
Faith and Labor is a podcast video series exploring the history of Catholic Social Teachings and how it can be used to bridge divisions and guide humanity to solve the great challenges facing the working class.
Hosted by John Andrechak of Laborlines and Evan Matthew Papp of Empathy Media Lab, they discuss history, scripture, encyclicals, current events, and how faith and love is needed to strengthen solidarity and heal a world in disarray.
The Episode 1 Pilot focuses on the 1891 Encyclical of Pope Leo XIII titled Rerum novarum ("of revolutionary change"), or Rights and Duties of Capital and Labor, that addresses the condition of the working classes.
They also discussed the controversy caused by the president of the U.S. bishops’ conference issuing a rogue statement critical of President Biden on the day of his inauguration that was publicly condemned by the Vatican.
We would love to hear your feedback, show ideas, and suggested guests for future shows, as we seek to promote what Pope Francis described in Fratelli Tutti as a more just and fraternal world where “Love shatters the chains that keep us isolated and separate; in their place, it builds bridges.”

My Labor Radio is hosted by Mark Gevaart, and is broadcast on WELT 95.7 FM in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Labor Radio interviews working people and reviews data and information essential to working families. In the words of Labor Leader Walter Reuther “There's a direct relationship between the ballot box and the bread box, and what the union fights for and wins at the bargaining table can be taken away in the legislative halls.”
Mark joined the United Auto Workers (UAW) early in his working life. He has spent the last 30 plus years as an advocate for working Americans in and outside of his own local. He understands the importance of having a voice in a workplace and the support of a labor agreement. Mark finds the idea of doing a Community Access Radio program about labor a rewarding experience. Involved in many organizing campaigns, contract negotiations, arbitration, the writing of contract language, and being on the picket line, Mark has a strong history of support for the American worker.

116. Labor goes to the Movies - Stand! with Danny Schur
Tuesday Feb 23, 2021
Tuesday Feb 23, 2021
If you like movies and are interested in the labor movement, hang out with Labor Heritage Foundation Executive Director Elise Bryant and DC Labor FilmFest Director Chris Garlock as they kick back and talk about their favorite films and chat with guests about work and workers on the silver screen.
On this first episode, Elise remembers that her neighborhood in Southeast Detroit didn’t have a movie theater so she’d walk to one in nearby River Rouge, where the films were big and in color, in contrast to the little black-and-white television set at home.
Then Danny Schur – composer and producer of Stand! the musical about the 1919 Winnipeg General Strike – drops by to share his own childhood memories of going to the movies at a huge theater in his tiny hometown of Ethelbert, 200 miles north of Winnipeg, Canada. “There were only maybe 1,000 people in town and half of them could fit into the theater.” Danny also discusses music, theater, why the actor’s clothes in Stand! are so clean and why every local union should buy the Black Magic 6.
Includes Stand, sung by Lisa Bell. Click here to see the movie!
Labor Goes to the Movies is produced by Chris Garlock.

Re:Work Radio is a women-led radio show and podcast that spotlights the voices of workers, immigrants, and people of color. Brought to you by the UCLA Labor Center. Re:Work also trains community producers and students in multimedia story production. The project includes curriculum and educational tools that use stories to learn about work.
SABA WAHEED - Co-Founder & Producer
Saba is the research director at the UCLA Labor Center and has a decade of experience conducting research in low wage sectors such as taxi, restaurant, nail salon, domestic work, etc. that have led to campaign and policy victories. Since 2009, she has co-produced, engineered and hosted the weekly radio show “Flip the Script” on KPFK. She strongly believes that research and media are powerful tools for community storytelling. For the past decade, she co-edited the national online magazine SAMAR. As a performer, she has worked with Teada Theater and East West Players and her writing has appeared in Hyphen Magazine. She received an MA in Anthropology from Columbia University.
VEENA HAMPAPUR - Producer
Veena is the ReWork communications specialist at the UCLA Labor Center. Dedicated to storytelling for social change, she discovered her passion for communications while working at various nonprofits including the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) in California and Desis Rising Up & Moving (DRUM) in New York, where she focused on issues related to homelessness, immigration, policing, and youth. Veena earned her PhD in Sociocultural Anthropology from UCLA in 2016. Her research focused on working class South Asian immigrants and their children, and examined how race, immigration, education, and surveillance shape one another in post-9/11 America. Veena is a filmmaker and 2012 Visual Communications Armed with a Camera Fellow; her films include advocacy and education films for community organizations as well as documentaries that have been showcased in film festivals, classrooms, and by the Smithsonian.
About the Labor Radio Podcast Network
Launched in April 2020, the Labor Radio Podcast Network focuses on working class issues that are often overlooked in the corporate-controlled media. The goal of the network is to help raise the voices of working people and strengthen organized labor to demand and achieve better treatment from workplaces and elected officials.
The Labor Radio Podcast Network is both a one-stop shop for audiences looking for labor content and a resource for labor broadcasters and podcasters. Resources include a weekly podcast summarizing shows produced by network members, marketing on social media, a website listing network shows and how audiences can find them, a database for contacting expert guests, access to a private listserv for Network members, and a weekly video call to increase solidarity and support amongst members.
If you are a journalist interested in learning more or if you’re a labor radio or podcast producer and want to join the network, contact us at info@laborradionetwork.org.
